Daily Korean Saju card — What Is a Day Master

Have you ever wondered about the deeper meanings behind your day-to-day experiences and decisions? In Korean astrology, one key concept that helps us understand our daily lives is the "Day Master." So, what exactly is a day master saju?

Understanding Day Master Saju

A day master in saju (Four Pillars) astrology refers to the heavenly stem that represents your birth date. This element not only influences your personal life but also plays a crucial role in understanding your daily energy and how it affects you. Think of it as the core self or the primary influence driving your actions and decisions each day.

What Is a Heavenly Stem?

The heavenly stems (천간, cheongan) are part of the traditional Saju system. There are 10 stems, each pairing one of the five elements with a yin or yang polarity. In Korean, they are: Gap (갑 甲), Eul (을 乙), Byeong (병 丙), Jeong (정 丁), Mu (무 戊), Gi (기 己), Gyeong (경 庚), Sin (신 辛), Im (임 壬), and Gye (계 癸). (You may also see these written with their Chinese readings — Jia, Yi, Bing, and so on — but a Korean Saju chart uses the Korean names.)

The stems alternate in polarity. The five yang stems are Gap (甲), Byeong (丙), Mu (戊), Gyeong (庚), and Im (壬); the five yin stems are Eul (乙), Jeong (丁), Gi (己), Sin (辛), and Gye (癸). So if your day stem is Gap or Byeong, yang energy leads your core self; if it is Eul or Gye, yin energy leads. Understanding this polarity helps explain how you naturally express your energy.

The Role of Ilgan

Ilgan (일간, 日干) literally means "day stem" — the heavenly stem sitting on top of your day pillar. This is your Day Master. (The stem-and-branch pair for the whole day together is called the ilju, 일주 日柱, or day pillar.) Your ilgan is the single most important character in your chart, the reference point the other seven characters are read against.

For example, a yang ilgan such as Gap (Yang Wood) tends toward outgoing, initiating energy, while a yin ilgan such as Gye (Yin Water) tends toward a more inward, reflective expression.

Practical Applications

Knowing your day master can help you make better decisions throughout the day. For instance, understanding whether it’s a yang or yin day can guide you on what activities to engage in or even how to approach conversations with others. If it's a yang day, you might feel more energized and ready for action; if it's a yin day, you may need to take things slower.
