What Is Palja? The Eight Characters Behind Four Pillars

Understand what Palja means in Saju astrology and how the eight characters shape your destiny.

What Is Palja? The Eight Characters Behind Four Pillars — Korean Saju

In the world of Saju astrology, understanding the eight characters that form the foundation of your astrological reading is essential. These characters—derived from the day, month, year, and hour of birth—are not just random dates but powerful tools for self-reflection and insight into one's life path.

Why Palja Works This Way

Saju astrology is rooted in a unique system that uses the solar calendar rather than the lunar one. The primary idea behind Saju is to understand the inherent energy of each individual based on their birth date and time, which is determined by the 24 Solar Terms (절기). Each character represents not just a point in time but an energetic influence that affects your life.

The stems and branches are derived from the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches. These characters are paired to create the four pillars of Saju:

  • Year Pillar
  • Month Pillar
  • Day Pillar
  • Hour Pillar

Each pair (stem+branch) is like a snapshot of your life at that exact moment, providing insights into different aspects of your personality and destiny.

Reading Soojin's Wood-Heavy Chart

Let's walk through the chart of Soojin, born March 18, 1994, at 3:20 AM in Seoul (female).

The strongest element is Wood, and the weakest is Metal.

Implications of the Chart

Given her Wood-rich chart born in the pre-dawn In hour, Soojin's life will likely be shaped by strong natural elements. Her career might thrive in environments that are nurturing or forested. Additionally, she may find herself more adaptable to change and could have a sharp intellect when it comes to understanding complex systems.

A Common Misconception is That Saju Is Only About Luck

A common misconception is that Saju astrology is purely about predicting luck. While Saju does offer insights into your future, its primary focus is on understanding the underlying energy of different moments in life. It helps you understand how these energies interact and influence each other.

Apply This to Your Life: A Step You Can Take Today

Try this:

  1. Identify Your Day Master: Look at the day pillar for the day you were born.
  2. Analyze the Element: Determine which element is dominant in your chart.
  3. Reflect on How It Impacts You: Consider how that element influences various aspects of your life, such as career choices and personal relationships.

What Changes When Fire Takes Over

Now let's contrast this with Minseok, born February 15, 1989, at 9:40 AM in Seoul (male).
